How is the score calculated?
We score five dimensions of financial transparency — public filings, filing timeliness, public verification, financial governance, and audit readiness — each weighted and traced to a specific public data point. The total is a weighted average on a 0–100 scale mapped to a letter grade.
Where does the data come from?
Public sources only. For nonprofits we read IRS Form 990 filings via the ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer and the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File. Every claim on a score page links to the record it came from.
Is this an accusation of wrongdoing?
No. The score is our analysis of publicly available data. A low score usually reflects gaps in the public record — not misconduct. We never assert an organization has done anything wrong.
Do I have to sign up?
No. The score is free and public. Nothing you enter is stored unless you choose to claim your profile.
